Dental Treatment for Autistic Patients
Autism is a type of neurodevelopment disorder that usually appears in the first three years of life.

The cause of Autism is unknown and just as there are varying levels of severity and symptoms there are likely multiple causes. Possible causes include everything from genetic components to environmental factors.
Symptoms can make it difficult to receive the medical attention needed such as dentistry.
Tips for an Autistic dental patient:
- Take a tour of the office prior to the first appointment to familiarize the patient with the environment
- The first appointment should be short and positive
- Don’t crown the child
- Fully explain procedures before they are done
- Autistics will want to know what is going to happen next
- Talk in direct short phrases
- Hand holding can be calming
- They can be calmed by using moderate pressure as opposed to a “light” touch.
- Some may need sedation
